Grid Computing Overview

SCS' grid computing solutions are an efficient and effective way to utilise unused compute cycles from existing servers and PCs to create supercomputers at a fraction of the cost. By tapping on existing machines, capital investment in hardware is drastically reduced, and on-demand computing becomes a reality.

SCS has partnered United Devices, a leading provider of secure grid solutions with a proven track record of building large-scale, heterogeneous grids, to offer quality solutions delivered by experienced and skilled IT professionals. Key solutions offered by SCS include: 

  • United Devices Grid
    MP A single grid solution that uses SEAL (secure execution and automation layer) technology to provide a comprehensive security architecture within a rich framework using open web services standards for rapid application integration. It offers unparalleled scalability together with simplicity of use through a single virtual interface to access different devices and advanced workload optimisation for greater efficiency. 
  • United Devices HPC Insight
    An enterprise capacity analysis and reporting solution for the entire high performance computing (HPC) environment, including clusters managed by third party schedulers and third party managers such as Platform LSF, Sun SGE, Altair Open PBS and PBS Pro. Targeted reports use data captured by its analytics engine, and are normalised and stored in a data warehouse.
  • United Devices MP Insight
    A grid reporting and utilisation reporting solution that provides rich data analysis across Grid MP-managed nodes. Real-time data can be viewed on a dashboard while current and historical data is analysed for a better understanding of capacity utilisation. The solution includes a rich set of over 60 custom reports.
  • United Devices Virtual Cluster
    A suite comprising Grid MP, HPC Insight and MP Insight, the solution leverages on existing DRMs (Distributed Resource Manager) for job submission and distributes work across virtual nodes in the grid. Capacity management and reporting tools complete the solution.

SCS has implemented Grid MP for the National University of Singapore's Tera-scale Campus Grid project (TCG@NUS) and for SG@Schools, a grid for sharing compute power among junior colleges and secondary schools in Singapore. To date, Hwa Chong Institution and Raffles Institution are plugged into the grid. The SG@Schools programme is an effort to promote PC Grid Computing in schools, and SCS is active in building up the grid computing awareness and skillsets through workshops for students. Students will be able to generate interesting solutions to solve computationally intensive problems in Science and Engineering by harnessing the enormous amount of processing cycles achieved through aggregating the available PCs in schools.
